Frequently asked questions

What is a normal blood sugar level? +
A normal fasting blood sugar is 70–99 mg/dL (3.9–5.5 mmol/L). For people with diabetes, target fasting blood sugar is typically 80–130 mg/dL (4.4–7.2 mmol/L). Post-meal targets are usually below 180 mg/dL (10 mmol/L) two hours after eating.
How often should diabetics check blood sugar? +
Most people with type 2 diabetes on oral medication check 1–2 times daily. People on insulin typically check 4–8 times daily or use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Ask your diabetes care team for your personalised testing schedule.
What is HbA1c and what is a good level? +
HbA1c measures average blood sugar over 2–3 months. The target for most adults with diabetes is below 7.0% (53 mmol/mol). Pre-diabetes: 5.7–6.4%. Normal: below 5.7%. It is tested every 3–6 months.
